ESP8266 Based Robot and Robot Controller

Could a NodeMCU Amica device (which contains an ESP8266-12 microcontroller/Wi-Fi module) be the brains of a robot? I had never built an electronics project that actually moved, so this was a good opportunity to find out. The ESP8266 features many capabilities and an inexpensive price.
