What is Social Robotics?

FTF on-the-street reporter talks to Heather Knight, Social Roboticist and Founder of Marilyn Monrobot about what it means to be a Social Roboticist and some of the most exciting robotics innovations on our horizon.

Heather is currently conducting her doctoral research at Carnegie Mellon’s Robotics Institute and running Marilyn Monrobot Labs in NYC, which creates socially intelligent robot performances and sensor-based electronic art. Her work also includes: robotics and instrumentation at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, field applications and sensor design at Aldebaran Robotics, and she is an alumnus from the Personal Robots Group at the MIT Media Lab. She earned her bachelor and masters degrees at MIT in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and has a minor in Mechanical Engineering.

Heather’s installations have been featured at the Smithsonian-Cooper Hewitt Design Museum, LACMA, SIGGRAPH, PopTech and the Fortezza da Basso in Florence, Italy. Her past work also includes interactive installations with Syyn Labs,including the award- winning Rube Goldberg machine music video with OK Go. She was recently named Assistant Director of Robotics at Humanity+.
